So what exactly happened from the day it got home to what it is now? Complete color change, everything? Did Joe just get bored one day and say "I want to paint it yellow/black, put one-tons under it, and make the motor rev to 9000rpms??

Basically. He will get bored and change it many, many, many, many, more times.
